Why Alyssa Is NOT Into Barbie Dolls

My cheeky munchkin is not a fan of Barbie dolls – she doesn’t know how to play with them properly, but she likes Barbie stuff like lunch bags, slippers, towels and the like. She even had it as a theme on her 5th birthday. If what happened when she was only 2 years old became the reason of her dislike to Barbie dolls, then I guess I am bringing up a child with great sense of understanding.

We were at the mall then and her Tita Lala (Alyssa’s aunt) pointed at the Barbie Dolls saying, “Alyssa look, Barbie.” Well, her aunt is just teasing her because she very well knows that Alyssa understands the word “MAHAL” (expensive) at that early age – she was even the one who told Alyssa that riding a taxi is expensive so she always preferred to ride a jeepney. Then I urgently responded, “Uh uh… Those are expensive, Anak (child). We can’t afford that.” From then on, Barbie dolls never caught her attention.

Last month, I was buying hubby’s gift for Valentine’s Day and I brought Alyssa with me. She saw this Barbie carriage and I can feel how much she really likes it, but she never expresses it boldly. She knows I won’t buy it because it might be “expensive” and she already has enough toys, according to her. I told her we’ll see how much it is and if we can’t afford it, we have to let it go. She always agrees anyway so I asked. It was £25 and really expensive for me, but she didn’t insist anymore when I told her it’s mahal. You know how a parent’s heart melt when you’ve got a really well-behaved kid who understands things sometimes adults fail to understand? So I went to the counter and paid for it. She was surprised! I told her, “It’s Valentine’s day anyway so here’s mum and dad’s gift for you.” It makes me smile thinking that I am far from having a teenager who would always ask for a cash advance.

She seems like dancing with joy here, but no... she's just being silly. haha
